What causes knee pain?

The most common causes of knee pain are:

Problems with the knee itself

Your knee is a complex joint with lots of moving parts. Tightness in the iliotibial band, which connects the knee to the hip, can cause the band to rub against the femur. Your kneecap can get dislocated or a piece of bone or cartilage can detach and float in your knee joint, a condition called loose body.

Injuries

Knee injuries are very common. You might injure your kneecap, resulting in a fracture. You might tear your anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), which connects your shin to your thigh. You can also tear your meniscus, a shock absorber in your knee, or irritate the tendons or bursa (small, fluid-filled sacs that cushion your joint) in your knee.

Other conditions

Arthritis, or inflammation in your joint, can cause knee pain. Some of the most common types of knee-affecting arthritis include:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Gout

Additionally, issues in another part of your body (foot or hip problems, for example) can cause you to adjust your gait, misaligning and stressing your knee.
